PURPOSE: To discriminate an unknown material by permitting a light source to transmit radiation beams toward an unknown material, receiving these radiation beams by a detector, comparing the diffused reflection characteristics of the unknown material with reference data, and deletion-processing. ;CONSTITUTION: Radiation beams are transmitted via a Fresnel lens 20 by means of a light source 14, and a lens 20 focuses the radiation beams as the beams pass through the opening port in a glass component 18 and is transmitted on a cloth F. The radiation beams diverged and reflected by means of the cloth F is then sent back through the opening port, a part of which is guided onto a recess face lattice 22. Reflected incident radiation beam is reduced by the lattice 22 and led to a sensor array 24. The output signals of each cell of the array 24 is proportional to the intensity of radiation beams diffused and reflected within the spectrum bandwidth of each cell. These signals are transmitted to a processor and is compared with reference reflection index data about the known cloth material.
