PURPOSE:To decide the emitted light quantity of first preliminary irradiation based on the focal distance information of a photographing lens. CONSTITUTION:A flash emission part 1 preliminarily irradiates an object at the time of measuring the distribution of light intensity and a light emission control part 2 controls light emission at the time of the preliminary irradiation. Also a focal distance detecting part 3 detects the focal distance of a photographing optical system and an emitted light quantity setting part 4 sets the emitted light quantity based on an output from the focal distance detecting part 3. When a light intensity discriminating part 5 discriminates the light intensity of the object, the flash emission part 1 performs the preliminary irradiation at specified emitted light quantity at the time of measuring the distribution of the light intensity linked with the output of the light intensity discriminating part 5.
