PURPOSE: To provide a preliminary irradiation device for detecting a focus capable of reducing the number of preliminary irradiation times up to focusing and the release time lag, in consecutive photographing. ;CONSTITUTION: An object is preliminarily irradiated with a stroboscope unit 6 at the time of measuring the distribution of light intensity, a CPU 1 controls the light emission of the stroboscope unit 6 in its preliminary irradiation and an interface IC 7 sets the emitted light quantity of the stroboscope unit 6, to discriminate the light intensity of a subject. Then, the CPU 1 changes the emitted light quantity of the stroboscope unit 6 at the time of measuring the distribution of the light intensity and uses the emitted light quantity in the previous preliminary irradiation stored in the CPU 1 prior to the output of the automatic focus IC 2, when the preliminary irradiation is executed in response to the starting action of the photographing sequence of a camera.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
