PURPOSE: To obtain a polymer for an epoxy resin curing agent and for other purposes without using a platinum catalyst by a method in which, after an acetylenic alcohol being added to an organopolysiloxane containing SiH group in the presence of a catalyst, the adduct is reacted with maleic anhydride in the presence of an acid catalyst. ;CONSTITUTION: In a first step, an acetylenic primary or tertiary alcohol is added to an organo(poly)siloxane having at least one SiH group in the presence of a catalyst which accelerates the addition of the hydrogen bonded to Si to an aliphatic multiple bond. In a second step, after diene being produced by the intramolecular elimination of water from an arkenol group introduced into a polymer, a (substituted) maleic anhydride is subjected to Diels-Alder reaction in the presence of an acid catalyst. As the occasion demands, in a third step, a polymer having anhydride groups is equilibrated by a linear organopolysiloxane having terminal triorganosiloxane groups, etc., to obtain a polymer composed of an average unit of formula I [R is a (halogenated) 1-18 C hydrocarbon; A is formula II (R1, R2 are each H, a 1-12 C hydrocarbon, etc.; R3 is H, a 1-4 C hydrocarbon; R4 is H, a halogen, etc.) and/or formula III; (a) is 0, 1; (b) is 0, 1-3].;COPYRIGHT: (C)1991,JPO
