PURPOSE: To automatically identify a series of image frames of an original motion picture film by measuring and evaluating the correlation between adjacent odd and even image scan lines, comparing each pair of fields with an adjacent pair about a correlation function and identifying a pair that is larger than the adjacent pair. ;CONSTITUTION: An image that is acquired when a telesine device sequentially scans frames of a motion picture film is recorded by a VTR, and a series of image fields AO, AE, etc., which are reproduced from the image record by another VTR is obtained. Movable kernels of fields X to Z are selected by the control of step controller 220, and two pairs of XY, YX, YZ and ZY of each candidate frame 222 to 228 are created. Each of these pairs is measured and evaluated by an evaluating device 230 to select the best candidate, and a selector 232 is controlled so that the best candidate may be included from a series of images A' to C', etc., of output frames.
