PURPOSE: To provide a dyestuff and photographic element which are useful as a sensitizing dyestuff for a silver halide photographic element and reduce dyestuff staining. CONSTITUTION: This silver halide photographic element contains the sensitizing dyestuff of the formula (where X1 and X2 are respectively independently atoms which are necessary for completing a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic nucleus subjected benzo condensation and may be respectively substd. with Z1 and Z2 and, in addition, may be substd. or nonsubstd.; (n) is an integer from 1 to 4; (p) and (q) are respectively independently 0 or 1; L is a respectively independently substd. or unsubstd. methine groups; R1 and R2 are respectively independently substd. or unsubstd. aryls or substd. or unsubstd. alkyls; Z1 is a substituent which contains both of an amide group and arom. ring but does not contain a heterocyclic 5-membered ring, having =2 heteroatms; Z2 is H or substituent; W1 is a paired ion).
