PURPOSE: To obtain a polymer of norbornene or a derivative thereof which polymer has excellent oil absorption by polymerizing the monomer by ring- opening polymerization using ruthenium trichloride as a catalyst in a specific mixed solvent in which the polymer is insoluble. ;CONSTITUTION: Norbornene or a derivative thereof is polymerized by ring- opening polymerization using ruthenium trichloride as a catalyst in a mixed solvent which comprises an alcohol (a) and an inert organic solvent (b) and in which the monomer is soluble but the polymer to be produced is not soluble. Thus, the objective polymer is obtained. The (a)/(b) ratio in the mixed solvent is not particularly limited as long as the monomer is soluble in the mixed solvent and the polymer is compoletely or partly insoluble therein. Although the (a)/(b) ratio varies depending on the kinds of the solvents (a) and (b), they may be mixed in such a ratio that the mixed solvent has almost the same solubility parameter as the monomer.
