PURPOSE: To allow handling any sort of work content no matter whether or not an auxiliary holder that may be an obstacle is attached, and improve the productivity in the case of a small quantity production of various types of items by a method wherein there are two or more selectable transfer routes through which a needle reaches the absolute origin. ;CONSTITUTION: Sewing data for making stitches on a work fabric 44 are stored in a RAM via a data input device. A needle 6 is driven and reciprocated up and down by a sewing machine motor 8, and the work fabric holder 40 is moved by an X motor 46 and a Y motor 58 based on the sewing data, so that stitches are made on the work fabric 44 held by the work fabric holder 40. Two or more transfer routes through which the needle 6 reaches the absolute origin on the work fabric holder 44 are stored in a ROM. An operator selects a transfer route by a dip switch 15 of a control panel so that the needle 6 and an auxiliary holder 45 of the work fabric holder 40 do not interfere with each other.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO&Japio
