PURPOSE: To make paper with improved strength and draining property during papermaking by adding enough crosslinking agent to provide starch having the specified breakdown viscosity to crosslink and thereafter adding the crosslinked, cationized or amphoteric starch which has been jet cooked under super atmospheric pressure. CONSTITUTION: A pulp slurry is made to paper smoothly and efficiently by adding enough crosslinking agent such as epichlorohydrin, phosphorus oxychloride, trimetaphosphate, composite acid anhydrides of polybasic acids and acetic acid, and sodium hypochlorite to provide starch having a breakdown viscosity of about 2-85% to starch to crosslink it, thereafter adding the crosslinked, cationized or amphoteric starch which has been jet cooked under super atmospheric pressure at a temp. of about 195-325 deg.F to an aq. slurry of pulp fibers and carrying out papermaking by a wet end system to improve paper strength and draining property on wires of a papermaking machine.
