PURPOSE: To provide compounds with non-linear optical properties having high second order sensitivity, good solubility and easily functionalized and the composite exhibiting second order non-linear optical properties characterized thereby. ;CONSTITUTION: Compounds of formula [wherein Ar represents six-membered heteroaromatic ring, five-membered aromatic ring or fused ring systems containing at least one five-membered heteroaromatic ring; the said heteroaromatic ring contains one heteroatom selected from O, N, S and Se; B is a conjugated functional group such as N=N, CH=N, CH=CH or the like; D is a first electron donating group such as NR5R6, CH=NR4 (wherein R4 is hydrogen or 1-10C alkyl; R5 and R6 represent each hydrogen 1-12C alkyl or the like); A is a first electron accepting group such as CN, CO2 or the like; n is of from 1 to 3; m is of from 1 to 9; B, D and A are Cr-bonding at α-position of the heteroaromatic ring with respect to a heteroatom, are provided. By disposing the said compounds as a layer or layers on a substrate of the chemically inert medium (for example glass, silica or polymeric materials) or by blending the said compounds as the guest compound into a thermoplastic polymer matrix, the composite exhibiting second order non-linear optical properties is formed.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
