The invention relates to a process for the selective catalytic hydrogenation of the carbonyl group of aromatic aldehydes of the formula IMAGE in which X can be a carboxyl group, a methyl group or halogen, to give the corresponding alcohols and methyl compounds. The catalytic hydrogenation is carried out with the addition of a solvent, if appropriate in the presence of organic acids, on a shaped supported catalyst containing a metal from the platinum group on a titanium oxide support in the presence of hydrogen at partial pressure of hydrogen of 5 to 50 bar and temperatures of from 100 to 300@C.
