In a plant for handling powders, and, in particular, a foaming plant for expandable polystyrene, a number of hoppers are filled automatically and efficiently, and by vacuum from storage silos to hoppers fitted with level regulators. All the filling requirements of the regulators are arranged in cycles by a chain of successive operations; the procedure always starts by filling a hopper by the shortest feed path of the system. The other hoppers are filled by successively longer routes, and, at the end of the sequence, but before the last feeder is stopped, feed to the storage silos is halted. The complete feed path is then drawn free and the sequence is ended by cutting out the last vacuum feeder. During the whole filling process the volume of feed air is controlled and if the vol is too low the supply of material from the storage silos is stopped so that the feed line is drawn freely before the filling process recommences or is interrupted by programme.
