Microscopic or macroscopic magnetic shield which is based on the use of such mono-crystalline whiskers as are obtained from high-temperature superconducting ceramics in their superconducting crystal directions. Whiskers form the superconducting part of the shield and an electrically insulating ceramic, polymer, intermetal or a metal which is a poor conductor forms its matrix which holds the whiskers together. Where the matrix or part thereof is a liquid polymer at the start of production, the shield can be painted or sprayed onto the surface of the piece which is to be protected and can solidify there to form a layer of a suitable thickness. The situation is similar when a ceramic suspension is used as an initial material for the matrix, but in this case the solidification of the matrix must be carried out by sintering. Various composite constructions containing superconducting whiskers can be used as magnetic shields, to remove electromagnetic interference and to make the shielded part invisible to radar, assuming that the temperature of the composite is suitable for making the whiskers superconductive.
