The invention discloses 4-substituted androstendione derivatives of the following formula (I) IMAGE (I) wherein R is amino or substituted amino or azido, one of R1 and R2 is hydrogen and the other is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl, and (x) and (y) are each, independently, a single bond or a double bond. The compounds of formula (I) are useful aromatase inhibitors.
