A bale press 1 has a press plate 3 which is guided displaceably in side guides 5 of a press box 2, and a press drive for moving it, which comprises two hydraulic cylinders 6, 7 acting on the press plate 3. In order to ensure a synchronously operating press drive in a logical way, the hydraulic cylinders 6,7 are connected in series one after another by a connecting line 12 between that portion 13b of the cylinder space which is on the return-stroke side of the first cylinder 6, and that portion 14a of the cylinder space of the second cylinder 7 which is on the operating-stroke side, these two portions 13b, 14a of the cylinder spaces having clear cross sections of equal size, and connecting lines 10, 11 for a common hydraulic supply device 8 originating from the two respectively other portions 13a, 14b of the cylinder spaces.
