ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA structural magnetic vibration controller and amethod for actively controlling vibrations through theuse of a magnetic coupling between a damper mass and astationary component of rotary machinery wherein thestiffness and damping characteristics of the magneticcoupling are controlled as a function of the relativemovements between a first electromagnet carried by themachinery and a second electromagnet carried by thedamping mass. The magnetic fields of the magneticcoupling formed by counterpoised electromagnets arecontrolled by electronic current control circuitry toachieve dynamic tuning via stiffness and dampeningcharacteristics of the magnetic coupling so as tosuppress system resonances which occur during transientmachinery operation as well as during steady stateoperation on the basis of a signal from positiontransducers that provides a displacement feedback thatis utilized to vary the coupling stiffness, and a firstderivative which is used to control the dampeningcharacteristic of the coupling as a function of therate at which the position sensed changes with respectto time.
