A programmable VLSI chip (200) and method for analog solution of a family of partial differential equations commonly encountered in engineering and scientific computing: the Laplace equation, the diffusion or conduction equation, the wave equation, the Poisson equation, the modified diffusion equation, the modified wave equation, and the wave equation with damping. The present invention provides for the real-time solution of large linear and nonlinear two dimensional partial differential equations and is compatible with existing digital systems.
