MICROBIAL DEGRADATION OF INDIGO AND INDIGO CARMINE

Biologically pure strains of microorganisms capable of degrading indigo and indigo carmine are disclosed. One of them, a bacterial strain designated H-12 has the identifying characteristics of expressing a thermostabile enzyme capable of degrading indigo and indigo carmine, Gram negative eubacteria and having phenotypic characteristics of Micrococcus and Methylobacterium. A method for treating water polluted with indigo or indigo carmine by bringing the water into contact with the microorganisms or with enzymes extracted from the microorganisms is also disclosed.
