A cooker with gas burners is covered with a ceramic, or similar, flat cover. The cover (5) above the burner (2) is left open so that the burner can be raised from a rest position beneath the cover level to a position above it where it can be used. When stowed away at its lower level, the burner is covered by a disc (7). A mechanism including cams operates to raise or lower the burner.
