In in-line combustion engines with odd numbers of cylinders the problem arises of balancing the moments of inertia of the second order. According to the invention this problem is resolved in that the balancing masses working on the Lanchester balance principle are carried separately from one another directly in bearings, which are connected to the crank casing. The drive for the individual balancing masses (8a, 8b, 9a, 9b) is derived from the third and eighth face of the crankshaft, since these are free of balancing masses of the first order. Viewed looking towards the crank star wheel, the first and second balancing masses are offset by an equal amount and in the same direction, so that the inertial forces of the second order cannot generate any additional torque about the crankshaft.
