Process for surface modifying the optical properties of a poly(methyl methacrylate) article

The process consists in applying onto a substrate a coating consisting of a polymer capable of grafting onto the substrate, an acrylic varnish, a grafting catalyst and a solvent attacking the substrate, the grafting catalyst being added just before the application of the coating onto the substrate. The polymer is a polyurethane introduced in the form of varnish. Organic pigments may be added to the coating. One or more layers may be applied. After drying, the material has a very fine matt appearance, with little scatter and a pebbled appearance to the touch as well as an indelible hydrophobic nature protecting against finger soiling. Applications especially in the field of decoration.
