According to the state of the art, refuse dumps (1) which are already closed are made tight and sealed and their mummification is awaited. However, as a result of small leaks from outside and chemical and biochemical processes inside, a certain amount of seepage water nevertheless arises, which has to be pumped off and disposed of. In the case of the described method according to the invention, the old refuse dump (1) is left open on the upper side so that rainwater (34) penetrates, and the seepage water collecting at the bottom is pumped off (13) and after a certain cleaning treatment (14, 18) is preferably sprinkled (24) over the refuse dump again. As a result, numerous harmful substances can be broken down biologically in an economical manner and other harmful substances can be mineralised and thus bound insolubly.
