Process for the preparation of metal phthalocyanines by reaction of ortho-dinitriles suspended or dissolved in organic solvents, or pulverulent mixtures of ortho-dinitriles with anhydrous ammine-metal-carboxylic acid salts or metal-amino-carboxylic acid complex compounds, in the absence of alkaline or chloride-containing additives, employing an ortho-dinitrile excess of from 0.1 to 5% by weight.
