The present invention relates to a system for treating wastewater from a metal treatment facility such as an automobile factory in a bioreactor using live microorganisms. Such waste water contains liquids that contain biodegradable fats and oils, synthetic biodegradable oils, oils and greases, and minerals such as non-biodegradable metals and silicon carbide. Such waste liquids require ten times longer water retention time (HRT) and solids retention time (SRT) than sewage treatment. Waste water suspended by solid particles from the reactor is discharged at a constant flow rate to separate high purity water through the ultrafiltration membrane. The concentrate is recycled to the reactor, except for periodic effluents to remove solids. The bioreactor can always run at a constant volume despite severe changes in flow rate in the membrane; Maintaining a constant flow rate of the feed inlet entering the reactor; Since the filtrate is recycled so that the filter membrane module can be operated at a relatively low pressure in a narrow range that does not damage the filter membrane, the filter membrane can be efficiently used for a long time. The operation of such a bioreactor allows the use of a reactor that is only half the volume of the reactor required for a system that does not recycle the filtrate. All solids larger than about 106 micrometers in diameter are filtered through a 140 mesh sieve to allow long, efficient operation of the filtration membrane. The long-term surprising effect of the system is evidenced by the test plant testing more than one year of automotive plant wastewater.
