The present invention provides a vanadium / phosphorus mixed oxide catalyst comprising vanadil pyrophosphate, optionally comprising an accelerator component, a vanadium / phosphorus mixed oxide catalyst precursor comprising a vanadil hydrogen phosphate, and optionally comprising an accelerator component. It relates to a method of deformation by treating in steps (a)-(c).;(a) an initial heat-up step in an atmosphere selected from the group consisting of air, steam, inert gas and mixtures thereof; (b) raising the temperature at a predetermined rate of temperature rise and continuously heating up in an atmosphere comprising oxygen molecules / steam; And (c) at the beginning of the maintenance / completion step in an atmosphere containing oxygen molecules / steam and then in an atmosphere containing non-oxidation, steam.;Such catalysts are useful for preparing maleic anhydride via partial oxidation of non-aromatic hydrocarbons, in particular n-butane, in the vapor phase with oxygen molecules or gases comprising oxygen molecules.
