The card reader has a slot (3) and a transport mechanism carrying a card-shaped data carrier (6) to a receiving chamber. The transport mechanism contains a spring mechanism which is tensioned when a card is inserted and whose tension release causes ejection of the card. The force of an electromagnet (12) diametrically opposes the spring force of the spring mechanism to restrain the mechanism during a read or write process. USE/ADVANTAGE - E.g. for reading magnetic cards or chip cards carrying data. The reader has a simple, compact transport mechanism ensuring problem-free data changes and return of the card to the user in the case of faults.
