Electrolyte soln. consists of an aq soln of a neutral salt mixed with 5-60(40)vol % of a polyhydric alcohol (I). A cathode and an anode are immersed in this soln. (I) is ethyl glycol or glycerol. The soln contains a buffer mixt pref a mixt of KH2PO4 and NA2HPO4 adjusted to pH 6.5-7. The electrode is useful for measuring the oxygen partial pressure in liquids and gases esp in medicine. Addn of (I) causes a redn. in the initial sensitivity but the sensitivity has better constancy over a long operating period.
