The longitudinal weld seam of pipes formed thermo-mechanically from sheet materials is heat-treated by compressing it in the circumferential direction of the pipe immediately after welding, without intermediate heating, thus utilising the heat generated by the welding process. The appts. for carrying out heat treatment of weld seams is also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - The procedure is used to homogenise the stress state in the weld seams of pipes produced from heat-treated sheet materials. The procedure and appts. eliminate the need for intermediate heating of the weld seam and hence reduce both the cost of installation and the cost of energy consumed.
