Disposable medical instrument disposal e.g. scalpols or strings - has chamber to melt the plastics and take the metal parts for collection in trough to cool as sterilised block for disposal
The disposal and sterilisation of used disposable metal and plastic medical instruments, includes heating in an enclosed space with gas extn. to melt the plastics. The molten plastics, free of metal, are collected in a lower trough in a heated zone. At the same time as the plastics material is melted, or after, the metal instruments are added to the molten matter. The trough is removed from the lower section and cooled, for a block of metal and plastics material to be removed which takes at least one charge, for disposal. Also claimed is an appts. with a lower heated chamber (4) below the heating chamber (3), with the collection trough (5). The molten plastics foot and the units (7) to allow the metal parts to pass through are between the two chambers (3,4). USE/ADVANTAGE - The technique is esp. for processing used disposable medical instruments such as syringes and scalpels, made of metal and plastics, in a hospital situation. The trough is sepd. from the melting zone, and only acts as a collection container for the molten plastics and metal parts, which can take a number of charges and produce a solid block of mixed plastics and metal for disposal.
