The invention concerns a TN cell comprising a nematic liquid crystal with positive dielectric anisotropy and a twist angle of about 90 located between two substrates equipped with electrode and orientation films, the product of the distance between the substrate plates d and the optical anisotropy d.$g(D)n being between 0.15 and 0.70 $g(m)m. The cell is characterized in that, to improve the grey-shade representation capacity, the liquid crystal contains a doping component so that the cell has a value for the interference-free quotient of the distance between the substrate plates d and the pitch length of the liquid crystal p within the range 0,1d/p0.5.
