A reactor for exothermic catalytic reactions at raised pressure has a pressure housing and a catalyst bed through which pass two heat-exchanger pipes. The horizontal heat-exchanger pipes are surrounded by an approximately cylindrical perforated catalyst basket with an upper catalyst filler gravity-flow inlet and a lower gravity-flow catalyst outlet within the pressure vessel. A gas chamber receives the gas leaving the catalyst bed, through which a supply pipe feeds gas into the catalytic bed in horizontal-parallel arrangement to the heat exchanger pipes. USE/ADVANTAGE - The reactor provides for the conduct of exothermic catalytic reactions. The arrangement facilitates the replacement of catalyst material which is lost by volume shrinkage and provides a structure of economic construction in which liquid or gas can be used as the coolant.
