Tubular reactor is for carrying out gas phase catalytic reactions. Two tube bundles are used above and below a common inlet branch (or outlet). The gas stream divides and flows out from either end of the vessel. On the cooling side, distributor plates are used to give uniform coolant flow along the walls of the tubes. The apertures on these increase towards the centre. A further baffle is used in the cooling side at the level of max. heat release. Used for strongly exothermic gas phase catalytic reaction. Can also be used on endothermic reactions. The capacity is not limited by the heat transfer factors nor by the construction.
