Isolation comprises incubating low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors with a labelled form of a ligand (I) in the presence of the test substance, and measuring the deg. of binding. (I) is material from a rhino-virus of the 'small rhino-virus receptor gp.' (J.Virol.,51,340,1984). Also claimed are the use of (I) for inhibiting the binding of physiological LDL ligands; a method for determining LDL receptors, comprising labelling (I), incubating it with the test sample, and measuring the deg. of binding of the labelled (I); and a method for delivery of a therapeutically active substance (II) into cells bearing LDL receptors, comprising coupling (I) with (II) to form a conjugate, and supplying the conjugate to the corresp. cell material. USE - The 1st method may be used to screen for substances capable of inhibiting binding of rhinoviruses or other ligands to LDL receptors. Method 2 may be used for the analysis, e.g., of cholesterol metabolism.
