The workpiece carrier is a spokeless ring (39) rotatably mounted on a stationary top plate (12). It is cyclically indexed by a tangential drive to bring the workpieces successively past manipulative, assembly or test stations which are cam actuated from control shafts (18). The control shafts are synchronously driven from an electric motor. Because the inside area of the workpiece carrier ring is unobstructed by bearings it also can be utilized for control shafts and associated workstations.
