An air control flap within the air conditioning system of a road vehicle has a linear actuator (21) in the form of a piston with a sealing diaphragm (25), that is spring-loaded (28). The piston moves against the spring when a sub-atmos. pressure is applied (27). The piston rod (24) connects with a transmission (30) that displaces a link (33) connected to the air control flap. The transmission has a profiled cam slot (36) that is engaged by the end of the link. The cam slot is shaped such that initial displacement is slow, as is the final displacement. Rapid movement occurs in between. USE/ADVANTAGE - Provides high force at end of movement range.
