In the cooling tower cooling water warms the inlet air in direct contact, thus forming a humid air stream, while cleaned flue gases are introduced into the humid air stream. Before the water directly contacts the inlet air, it warms indirectly the inlet air via an intermediate partition. Thus a dry air stream is formed and used to form a jacket round the humid air stream. The cooling tower has a vertical axis shell with inlet at lower end and outlet at the top. The cooling water feed is coupled to a wet portion in the inlet region, above which is an opening for the cleaned flue gases. USE/ADVANTAGE - For power plant cooling water, with increased tower shell protection against corrosive components of cleaned flue gases.
