The video recorder has a first head pair (K1) of reduced gap width for recording a picture carrier (BT) and a colour carrier (F) in an upper magnetic layer and a second head pair (K2) of greater gap width for recording the tone carriers (T) in a lower magnetic layer of a magnetic tape (T) conveyed at a nominal longitudinal speed on the head drum (21). The recorder has switches (Sa,Sb,Sd,Se) for change-over to a second method of operation, in which the longitudinal speed in recording and reproduction is changed over to double the nominal value and in the intermediate spaces between the tracks a third head pair (K3) is arranged on the head drum (21) on which a frequency-modulated colour carrier (Fs) is recorded.
