The sextant (11) is fitted with a radiation sensor (12) and is connected to a navigation computer (20). The sextant is aligned with the object in the sky currently exhibiting the maximum instantaneous radiation intensity by the radiation sensor (12). The radiation sensor is a radiometer, and the navigation computer has solar and lunar state tables. The sextant also has a north-seeking reference transducer (22) and a receiver (18) for instantaneous time information received by radio.
