A process is disclosed for applying a coating made of a mixture (7) of the precious stone lapis lazuli on a substrate (1, 4, 5). A crystalline lapis lazuli pigment (11) is used, mixed with a colourless binder (12), this mixture (7) is applied on the substrate (1, 4, 5) and if required is ground or polished after drying or setting on the substrate (1, 4, 5). For that purpose, a crystalline lapis lazuli pigment (11) with a grain size comprised between 20 and 60 micrometers, preferably between 20 and 40 micrometers, is mixed with 1 to 6% by weight crystalline pyrite (10) with a grain size comprised between 30 and 150 micrometers, preferably between 60 and 90 micrometers, and the mixture is mixed with a colourless binder (12). The finished mixture (7) consists of 100 grammes of a colourless binder (12) with at least 55 grammes crystalline lapis lazuli pigment (11) with a grain size comprised between 20 and 60 micrometers, preferably between 20 and 40 micrometers, and with 1 to 6% by weight crystalline pyrite (10) having a grain size comprised between 30 and 150 micrometers, preferably between 60 and 90 micrometers. The pyrite in the mixture may also be replaced by a possible pyrite substitute.
