Mfr. of a grinding roll involves application of an anti-wear layer of hard material onto an elastic carrier layer on the cylindrical roll surface by means of build-up welding. The method is characterised by the fact that the anti-wear layer is applied in the form of individual anti-wear blocks (4,4') materially separated from one another, with the separation spaces (3) between the blocks extending at least over the thickness of the hard anti-wear material. Pref., the welding process is interrupted after completion of each anti-wear block. The block produced last is cooled down. Subsequently at least the region of the roll to be provided with the next block is heated up to a required temperature. The block size is chosen dependent on predetermined maximum weld duration. USE/ADVANTAGE - Mfr. of grinding rolls for diminution of minerals, ores etc. Largely crack-free anti-wear layer of the roll is achieved by a relatively simple manufacturing process, even when the build-up welding process is interrupted.
