The computer (10) receives and evaluates signals from the speedometer (20), brake pedal position sensor (22) and accelerator pedal position sensor (24). It delivers an output (18) to a device (26) which indicates whether or not the parking brake should be applied. To prevent forward creep from standstill e.g. at traffic lights, pressure is produced in the wheel brake cylinders when the road signal from e.g. antilock braking system sensors shows no movement while both brake and accelerator pedals are released. ADVANTAGE - Driver comfort is increased with no need to apply footbrake or handbrake while standing at junctions or in traffic queues.
