Characteristic values concerning the respective average volume of receivable programme signals are made available at the receiver side. The characteristic value of the programme which is already being received is compared with the characteristic value of a programme to be received. By establishing a characteristic value difference the reproduction level of the programme signal to be received is adjusted so that the programme signal to be received is reproduced with approximately the same volume as the currently received programme signal or with a level difference given by an adjustment value pre-specified by the user. ADVANTAGE - Reduces volume differences between recorded and/or radio transmitted audio signals on switching between programme signals to avoid jumps in volume levels.
