In the surface remelting of a workpiece (40) esp. a crankshaft or camshaft, by effecting relative motion between an energetic (esp. laser) beam source (26) and a workpiece clamping deice (24) in a work station (12), the novelty is that the workpieces (40) are subjected to controlled preheating in a preheat station (14) preceding the work station (12), before successive stepwise feed to the work station, and to controlled cooling in a cooling station (16) following the work station, after the remelting operation. Also claimed is appts. for carrying out the above process. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for surface hardening of cast iron camshafts and crankshafts. The process allows inexpensive prodn. of high quality camshafts or crankshafts.
