Quat. bis-sorbitylaminopolyols (A) prepd. by ring-opening epoxide cpds. with bis-sorbitylamines of formula Z-NH-Z (I) and then quaternising by known methods using alkylation agents or alkylene oxides, are claimed. Z = sorbityl gp. The epoxide cpds. used are pref. epoxides of olefin cpds. of formula (II), unsatd. fatty acid lower alkyl esters of formula (III) or unsatd. fatty acid glycerine esters of formula (IV). R2 = 1-22C alkyl; R3 = H or 1-22C alkyl; R4CO = unsatd. 16-22C acyl; R5 = 1-4C alkyl; and R6CO, R7CO, R8CO = unsatd. 16-24C acyl. The epoxide-bis-sorbitylamine mol.ratio is pref. 1:0.5-1.5, and ring opening is pref. carried out at 80-150 deg.C Pref. the alkylating agent is a methyl halide, dimethyl sulphate or dimethyl phosphate, in a (A)-alkylating agent mol. ratio of 1:0.5-1, or an (A)-alkylene oxide mol. ratio of 1:1-10 is used. Quaternisation is pref. carried out in the presence of a short-chain aliphatic alcohol at 30-100 deg.C, 1-10 bar. USE/ADVANTAGE - (A) are useful as anti-static agents for textiles (claimed). (A) are readily dispersible in cold water, bio-degradable and processable to give low viscosity aq. concentrates.
