Brake lining wear indicator - uses series of wear stages visible through lining back plate

The wear indicator is for a brake pad for a vehicle disc brake. The friction lining (2) has a recess or blind bore (7) in the region of a through-bore (6) in the backing plate (3). The recess extends in a narrowing manner towards the friction surface (9) when the pad is new and as the pad wears the disc becomes visible from the rear side (10) of the backing plate. The recess is step-shaped and the narrowing follows in stages (8). USE/ADVANTAGE - Stepped tapered blind bore in disc brake pad allows the state of wear to be read easily by counting off the number of stages of bore exposed.
