The appts. is pref. operable by one hand by ergonomically designed hand grips (13,14), the drive unit being mainly below them. The surface handling device can be a carrier for smoothing or polishing material. The hand grips are formed mainly in the extended axis of the rotatable shaft (3). The hand grips can be in the form of hand-matching recesses, formed pieces or arcs. The drive unit is an electric or compressed air motor. The appts. has a wt. of about 200 to 800 g. Switches and controls can be installed in the region between the thumb and index finger of the gripping hand. An accumulator can be provided for power supply. ADVANTAGE - Light, single-handed operation with no problems of coordination arising.
