The cathode for copper electrodeposition consists of a flat steel plate (1) joined to a metal support beam (2) which has a copper surface and is joined to the steel plate (1) by one or more well means of a Ni/Cu weld material. Prodn. of the above cathode comprises heating the support beam (2) to 500 deg.C and electrically welding the steel plate (1) to the support beam (2), simultaneously from both sides with two weld seams using two Ni/Cu electrodes under shielding gas. USE/ADVANTAGE - For electrorefining of copper and for electrowinning of copper from etching baths, esp. as used in printed circuit mfr. The cathode is simple to produce from inexpensive commercial semi-finished products, does not require an overall copper coating and has good electrical properties.
