In a centrifuge drum for concentrating suspended solids, the concentrated solids are passed through channels from an outer solids space of the drum to a radially inward lying first stripping chamber from which it is removed at intervals by a first stripping element, connected to a concentrate line, the separated clear phase being passed from the inner region of the drum into a second stripping chamber and being continuously withdrawn by a second constantly immersed stripping element connected to a clear phase line. The novelty is that a device (15) is provided in the clear phase line (13) for adjusting the liq. level in the second stripping chamber (11) to outer and inner levels, the diameters of the first (7) and second (12) stripping elements being such that, on adjustment to the outer level, the adjusted liq. level in the first stripping chamber (6) lies radially outwardly of the diameter of the first stripping element (7) and, on adjustment to the inner level, this first chamber liq. level lies radially inwardly of the diameter of the first stripping element. Pref., the liq. level adjusting device (15) is a choke element (14) which consists of a pressure regulating device with at least two presettable pressure values. The choke element (14) is connected to a control device (17). USE/ADVANTAGE - Used e.g. in biochemistry for concn. of living cells. The centrifuge drum has low control costs for periodically ensuring reliable stoppage of solids discharge and causes no heating of the first stripping element by liq. friction during this phase.
