A new model for predicting the thermal and electricalrnperformance of solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC)rncogeneration devices for residential buildings hasrnbeen developed. This is a system-level model thatrnconsiders the thermodynamic performance of allrncomponents that consume energy and produce thernSOFC-cogeneration device's thermal and electricalrnoutput. The model relies heavily upon empiricalrninformation that can be acquired from the testing ofrncoherent systems or components and is designed forrnoperation at a time resolution that is in the order ofrnminutes. Hence it is appropriate for use in wholebuildingrnsimulation programs where it can bernapplied to assess the energy and greenhouse gasrnemissions benefits of this nascent technology.
