Apparatus for carrying out an intensive digesting process for composting vegetable matter and sludges or other compostible waste material and soils, in the case of which the starting products, mixed in a certain ratio and homogenised, are fed to digesting containers (9) which, for their part, are mounted in a framework (10) such that they can rotate about their longitudinal axis. Filling of the rotating digesting containers (9), which exhibit helices and mixing elements on their inner side, takes place in accordance with a gravimetric principle, as does the emptying thereof, the latter taking place, however, in the opposite direction of rotation. The internals on the inner side of the digesting containers (9) are provided with openings through which oxygen-containing air can pass through a supply line (11) into the interior, to be precise such that the flow through the container contents takes place in a uniform manner. By virtue of rotational movements of the digesting containers (9) about their longitudinal axis, the contents thereof can, at certain time intervals, be thoroughly mixed and homogenised, this balancing and accelerating the intensive digesting process.
